Treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (colitis)
ABOUT OF

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that affects the stomach and intestines, which together form the gastrointestinal tract. Some of the symptoms include cramps, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea or constipation (or both). IBS does not cause changes in intestinal tissue or increase the risk of colorectal cancer.

Symptoms of IBS vary, but they usually persist for an extended period. The most common include:

- Pain, cramping, or bloating in the abdomen related to bowel movements

- Changes in the appearance of stools

- Changes in the frequency of bowel movements

TREATMENT AND FOLLOW-UP

Treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) focuses on relieving symptoms so you can live with as few symptoms as possible.

Mild symptoms can often be managed through stress management and lifestyle changes.

Consult your doctor if you experience a persistent change in bowel habits or other IBS symptoms. These may indicate a more serious condition, such as colon cancer.
